The story's themes were inspired by Lewis Carroll, quantum physics, Jung, and Crowley; its visual style by surrealism, Eastern European creepiness, Cocteau, Artaud, Švankmajer, the Brothers Quay, etc.

Diving into complex and harsh themes, Arkham Asylum finds its place among other works of the Dark Age of comics, such as The Killing Joke, The Dark Knight Returns or Kraven’s Last Hunt. In Arkham Asylum the police calls Batman because the Joker and other inmates have taken over Arkham, taking hostage the doctors and nurses. Once in place, the criminal gives him an hour to be able to escape. In doing so, he will have to dive through the Asylum’s patients and the traumas they represent. The Joker guides Batman during this trial, like a distorted version of the Virgil-Dante couple from the Divine Comedy. Quite the opposite, like many times before, the Joker wants to prove Batman isn’t so different from his enemies.

In the Mouth of Madness A Storyteller's Testament

Perched in the Hollywood hills above the city, the Stahl House is an icon of Mid-Century Modern architecture. In 2016, TIME named Shulman's photo one of the 100 Most Influential Images of All Time. Amadeus Arkham ended up living the remainder of his life in the asylum he founded, after losing a battle with his own private mental illness which started at childhood and was fueled by the murder of his wife and daughter. Many years later, the inmates have taken over (as opposed to just getting out like usual) and threaten to kill the staff unless Batman comes.

Its eery allure also made it the perfect backdrop for David Lynch’s iconic neo-noir mystery Mulholland Drive. When this residential house was built by Vienna-born Rudolf Schindler back in inspired by a recent trip to Yosemite with his wife - it was extremely unconventional at the time for a place to live. In reality, it was meant to be a cooperative live-work space between two families, much like a camp site. Having been the residence of the Schindlers and then other creatives, this WeHo hidden gem is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday as an architectural center. The only Richard Neutra-designed house that is now open regularly to the public, the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences is a Silver Lake hidden gem that was built by the famed architect in 1932.

Cavendish came to believe that he was destined to continue Arkham's work.

A 1989 Batman graphic novel written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Dave McKean. The first and last panels symbolically enclose Batman’s journey. In the first, there’s an image of the moon in the night sky, while in the last the moon is represented within a tarot card. The card represents a moon between two dark towers, implying that one must go through darkness to reach the light. It’s what Batman achieved facing his traumas and the fear of madness. The story is woven tightly around a small number of symbolic elements, which combine and recombine throughout, as if in a dream.

More From the Los Angeles Times

As Batman ventures deeper, he discovers the origin of how the asylum was established, the history of its builder Amadeus Arkham, and the supernatural and psychological mystery that has been haunting the area. Arkham renovated the family manor into the asylum following his subsequent inheritance of the property after his mother committed suicide. We piled all this stuff on top of it, and dressed it up in its best clothes, and sent it out. At the end of the day, if you really love to do Batman comics, then that's probably the best thing to do.

It is revealed that Cavendish orchestrated the riots, and has Batman read the diary of the asylum's founder, Amadeus Arkham, when questioned why. The shingled roof, wonky windows, and intentionally dilapidated facade of the Spadena House (which you might know as the Witch’s House) would make anyone do a double-take. It’s without a doubt the best known Storybook structure and is ambushed by trick-or-treaters during Halloween when the gnarled overgrowth and handcrafted pumpkin become the ultimate backdrop.

These flashbacks reveal that he was inspired to become a psychiatrist because of his mother's mental illness. Dave McKean drew the principal art and the cover art of the Arkham Asylum graphic novel with Morrison supplying their own thumbnail layouts to the artist as guide of how the author wanted the panels in each page to function coherently. For example, a Greek inscription can be seen scratched on the doorway of Maxie Zeus's electroshock chamber, which translates into "Discover thyself"; much of the symbolism was later explained and expanded in the annotated script. Artisans from around the globe flocked to create large, detailed sets for smash-hit period films dominating the industry at the time. Eventually, the filmmakers and movie stars wanted homes that matched their flush pockets and global status. Revival styles soon became the norm in Los Angeles and a wander through the streets still makes passersby question what city they’re in.

During the renovation, all of the remaining original structures from the Hearst days were demolished, except for a 110-foot Italian marble swimming pool and one of the guest homes, now known as the Marion Davies Guest House. The Annenberg Community Beach House opened to the public in April 2009. The site is open daily and is also used as a special events/wedding venue and filming location. Since his entry into the field, Grant Morrison has been hailed as an innovative thinker - using the comic book genre to introduce and expound upon his bold theories of the human psyche.

As they plan to exact revenge, Batman runs into the depths of the asylum. What follows is a surrealist, heavily atmospheric sequence of symbols based on everything from The Bible and the occult to Jungian and Freudian psychology. Had written a few short and evocative paragraphs on the history of Arkham Asylum and it was here I learned of poor Amadeus Arkham, the hospital's founder, whose wife and daughter had been murdered by Martin "Mad Dog" Hawkins. In Wein's précis, Arkham's madness was described as a result of the Stock Market crash of 1929.
